4D1-3.x was the final major release of the 4D1 systems before they were officially called IRIX. It is also the final version to use 4Sight, though it also introduced X11 through the XNeWS.

Improvements over 2.x

4D1 2.x is very limited in scope of information out there, but was often referred to as short-lived, beta-quality release, likely using MEX instead of 4Sight.

4D1-3.3 Release Information

  • Logical Volumes were introduced in 4D1 3.3
  • Steps to improve POSIX.1 (IEEE Std 1003.1-1988) compliance
  • Merging of page and buffer caches in kernel, improving memory performance
  • Nearly complete ANSI C support in compiler and ANSI-style headers in system, no more K&R
  • 4.3BSD compatibility and support for BSD-like interfaces
  • lpd/lpr print support
  • Support for sticky directories
  • 24-bit retained mode support on 4Sight

4D1-3.2 Release Information

  • Synchronous SCSI mode added to drivers
  • Lock a process to a specific CPU on Power Series systems
  • Enhanced gr_osview
  • Multiprocessor Implementation of STREAMS
  • Improved X11 support.
