Improvements over 2.x

4D1 2.x is very limited in scope of information out there, but was often referred to as short-lived, beta-quality release, likely using MEX instead of 4Sight.

4D1-3.3 Release Information

  • Logical Volumes were introduced in 4D1 3.3
  • Steps to improve POSIX.1 (IEEE Std 1003.1-1988) compliance
  • Merging of page and buffer caches in kernel, improving memory performance
  • Nearly complete ANSI C support in compiler and ANSI-style headers in system, no more K&R
  • 4.3BSD compatibility and support for BSD-like interfaces
  • lpd/lpr print support
  • Support for sticky directories
  • 24-bit retained mode support on 4Sight

4D1-3.2 Release Information

  • Synchronous SCSI mode added to drivers
  • Lock a process to a specific CPU on Power Series systems
  • Enhanced gr_osview
  • Multiprocessor Implementation of STREAMS
  • Improved X11 support.
